For many older Australians, ANZAC Day is the most emotionally significant day of the year — more so than Christmas. Memorial art projects in aged care and community settings should reflect that weight.

Lead With Story, Not Craft
Start the session with a short, gentle conversation. Not interrogation — invitation. Many residents have stories they rarely tell, and ANZAC Day is one of the days they sometimes choose to.
Have tea, brushes and a slow start. Don't rush into making.
Hand-Painted Poppy Canvases
A simple red poppy on a small canvas is achievable for almost any resident. Use a pre-sketched outline and 3 colours — red, black, green. Lay them out together on a long table afterwards and the effect is striking.
Display them in the foyer for the week of ANZAC Day.
Memorial Paint-by-Numbers
A custom paint-by-numbers canvas featuring a poppy field, the dawn service, or a sepia photo of a family member's service portrait can be a deeply meaningful project. Old service photographs vary a lot, so it helps to know which photos work best. Allow weeks, not days, for completion.
Frame the finished pieces for the resident or their family.
Collaborative 'Wall of Names'
Provide a long sheet of heavy paper and let residents handwrite or stamp the names of family members who served. Add pressed flowers or painted poppies around the edges. Display it during ANZAC Day services.
This works particularly well in dementia-friendly settings where individual focus is harder to sustain.
Hold Space for Emotion
Memorial art can bring up grief that's been quiet for decades. Have a staff member present who can sit with someone if needed, and don't treat tears as a problem to fix.
The point of these activities is remembrance — and remembrance is rarely tidy.
Done with care, ANZAC Day art projects become more than activities. They become small acts of community remembrance — exactly what the day is for.
